Here’s to us, the Black Dogs and the Pit Bulls…
May the Odds be Ever in Our Favor.
I used to do a lot of animal rescue work, so I can tell you a couple of things.
At the “shelters” where people dump their non-human family members, always for stupid reasons and always stupidly thinking their betrayed kin will find new homes now that they’ve become inconvenient, it’s a sad fact that most of these animals will die there. It’s also a fact that the last to be adopted and the first to be put down are always the black dogs (and cats) and the pit bulls.
For whatever reason, people looking to adopt generally walk right on past the black animals, as if their eyes can’t resolve their details or something. And the pit bulls… oh what undeserved stigma they have suffered. Of all dogs, they are probably the least likely to ever bite you. But hype, hysteria, and lurid media headlines have lied about these dogs so long that, not only do people fear adopting them, but building managers, housing authorities, hotel owners, and even homeowner’s insurance brokers refuse to allow these dogs anywhere to live and throw people out for taking them in.
So yes. It’s always the black dogs and the pit bulls who wind up crowded together at the end of the line, needing rescue, needing help, needing love so much. Without it, they could die.
Here I am. Here we are. At the ends of ropes and behind bars and straining at our leashes. Sometimes, we find each other. Sometimes, we liberate and save each other and ourselves. Show us some love. And Black Dogs and Pit Bulls, UNITE. Let’s stand together, hold each other’s hands, and save ourselves. We have to. Who else will?
